Self Harm Awareness + infomation Video
There are two types of self harmers. There are the ones who everyone stereotypes all self harmers of being and are known as "emo's" or "goths". These people do it because they think it's cool, to fit in or even purely to entertain themselves. But the real truth is not all self harmers are like this. (quick fact... only 1/20 EMO's and goths have ever tried self harm!) There is WAY more people that self harm because they use it as a way of coping with feelings that can sometimes be too hard to talk about. These people are much more likely to hide it, lie and be ashamed about it purely because its not socially exceptable. These people hide it SO well that this mistake of all self harmers being "emo's" still exists as people who have never experienced self harm just can't see the facts.
-ONE TIP IF YOU KNOW OF SOMEONE WHO SELF HARMS ... DON'T LABEL THEM OR EVER JUDGE THEM, just help them and be there for them when they need you.
Self harm is much more common than people think. In every secondary school classroom at least 2 teens have at least tried self harm. That's about 1 in every 15 teens. It's not just teen "emo's" that self harm. It can be both sexes of any age and social group. Its most commonly thought of as teen girls but people would be surprised of the reality.
Some self harm can be closely related to depression or another kind of mental health problem- but not always. Depression is an imbalance of "good" chemicals in the brain which means that you often feel REALLY low and upset, sometimes you just can't explain why. Often you feel like life just isn't worth living anymore. This can be scary for anyone of any age. These feelings can be soo painful to deal with that self harm can seem like the only way to cope. The physical pain is MUCH easier to deal with than the emotional. It is REALLY hard to explain how hard it really can be. The only way of really understanding people who are either going through this or did... is to go through it yourself.
People also link self harm closely to suicide. In fewer cases this is true... but mostly it's completely opposite. Self harm is a way of trying to cope with life and horrible feelings that the person maybe going through, where as suicide is just giving up. Sometimes if the harmer doesn't receive the right help for them then the harming can get worse or even lead to them to wish to end their lives.
It can be done for RELIEF (from either problems or emotional build up and they use it as a way of letting that all out), CONTROL (people can feel that they have no control and sometimes people do at as its the only thing they have control over in their lives), TO FEEL MORE ALIVE (people can become soo numb and feel like everything is unreal ... self harm can be the only way they can feel real again) and sometimes to PUNISH themselves. There are many more reasons too. People are different and have their own reasons. Whatever the reason is... HELP IS NEEDED.
There are many different forms of self harm such as: cutting, biting, hair pulling, hitting, burning, bone breaking, bruising, drug misuse, starving themselves, overdosage and picking at skin. Cutting is the most common form of self harm. None of these ways are "worse" than others, the main thing is... if you or you know anyone who has done one of these on purpose, talk to someone and get help. No one should ever feel as bad as to do any of these and then suffer in silence.
People who self harm tends to feel SOOO alone. What they don't know is... they really aren't. Most of the time you will know somebody who self harms or have tried it but you may never know it! It can be the HARDEST thing in the world for a self harmer to seek help, it really can be but if you or someone you know does it you should always seek help how ever hard it will be... I promise you it'll will be worth it. You will get better. You just need to find someone who you can talk to, someone you feel can help you. The harsh truth is in most cases you just won’t be able to do it alone.
